NetNEWS Spring 2008
NetFort Launch Release 6.2 of flagship LANGuardian product.
Following on from the success of Release 6.0, which received high levels of customer take up and satisfaction in 2007, Release 6.2 reflects strong investment in LANGuardian development and offers some exciting enhancements and additions to the product suite.
“Many of the enhancements to Release 6.2 have resulted directly from responding to Customer feedback and requirements. We have also significantly extended the scalability and value of LANGuardian in detecting and analyzing application based anomalies and providing all-in-one network activity monitoring capabilities”.

NETWORKSHOP36
We recently exhibited at Networkshop which was a great success NetFort at NetWorkshop – 8-10 April University of Strathclyde 2008
Organised by JANET(UK) and hosted by a Higher Education Institution - The University of Strathclyde - The NetWorkshop conference provided a forum for discussion on the latest network technologies and brought together expertise from all the fields of networking.
John Brosnan, MD NetFort Technologies was speaking on “Acceptable and Fair Usage Policies; Evolving to suit the needs of the Millennials"
The media refers to Millennials as “the most high-maintenance, but also most high-performing workforce in the history of the world”. Why? Because they have more information in their heads and at their fingertips than ever before. In general, most Millennials tend to believe in a “no-walls” approach when it comes to sharing information. Why shouldn’t all information be shared? Their strength is digital sophistication; some would even claim that the true concept of “information technology” is their birthright.
The presentation examined:
  • Social networking and its wide ranging affect
  • Fair utilisation of network assets i.e. desktops and bandwidth
  • The security perspective of exposing your personal data
  • Potential for online bullying
  • Increased usage of proxies and anonymisers
  • The unprecedented rise in levels of P2P activity
John Brosnan, considered the relative merits of using Acceptable and Fair Usage Policies vs. blocking access, as strategies to tackle these evolving challenges.

Meet the Team – A Day in the Life of Aisling Brennan
Aisling Brennan Aisling joined the company in May 2007 and is based at Headquarters in Galway, Ireland. Before joining NetFort, she was a software engineer with HP Galway.
Natasha Clement-Jones interviewed Aisling about her role.
Can you describe a “typical” day at NetFort?
During a typical day I work in the Galway office undertaking customer support work during the morning and spend the afternoon testing. My work includes resolving customer issues, which can include upgrades, LANGuardian training and providing monitoring.
A key part of my role is creating customer requests, which can include:
  • Customized Reports and trends
A key part of my testing role can include:
  • Testing new features
  • Identifying any bugs
  • Verifying bugs which have been resolved/ fixed
I collect feedback from customers and identify potential new areas for development.
I also visit Customers to do training, installs, upgrades and pilot installs. Customers contact me via telephone or email and I also provide remote assistance/training/monitoring.
How do the NetFort Team respond to customer questions and requirements?
We have defined processes to respond to customer needs including a support ticketing system and a customer feature request system. NetFort offer training to all our clients with events being held throughout the year. We also offer Go to Assist sessions, Web Ex sessions and Webinars
How have you seen the LANGuardian providing most value to customers/ solving problems where previously they had no visibility?
I’ve seen particular value for clients in the LANGuardian’s ability to trend print file server usage, highlight bottlenecks, report on Top Users and alert on security considerations.

Aisling has recently created a report called User External Anonymizer Proxy Access, which highlights many ways in which users are trying to access the internet anonymously. The LANGuardian is very powerful at detecting and alerting on this information.
What’s the best thing about being part of the Team NetFort?
Such a friendly bunch of people and a truly customer focused company.

New Report – “P2P; torrent traffic – Total visibility”
A New Report can be found under the “Customer Reports” section of the LANGuardian, which highlights the advantages of “Total Internet Traffic Visibility”.
Bit torrent makes downloads difficult to decipher, identification of the torrent files, which have been downloaded, can provide a new level of visibility.
